Can you run without a hood/bonnet?

Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:00 am

Is there a requirement or by-law for vehicles to have a hood when driven on roads?

What's a hood bonnet?

Considering hood may imply soft top, not necessarily the thing covering my engine compartment, I clarified hood/bonnet as this was not a can I drive my Jeep topless topic.

If it must be covered, to drive on roads, can I just tarp it or something?

Well I don't think tarping it would be the best idea. It would be hard to properly attach it, and you certainly wouldn't want it to fly off on you as you were driving.

Are you having yours painted or something Gary?

Back in the day we used to do some crazy things on sunday cruise nights like go hoodless, but times have changed.

I may be getting my hinges bedlined by Tyler at some point and we are a 1 vehicle family so I am trying to figure out how to go hoodless/doorless a couple days vs. just giving him the vehicle and borrowing one off someone else.

It has to do with pedestrian safety in the event of a collision. Then don't want the guy getting tossed into a hot engine bay with a spinnin fan an burning hot exhaust. Atleast tht is what I was told when I thought of it. What about making a plywood hood as a temp setup. Bolt it to were the hinges go, some weather stripping to protect paint and a ratchet strap to hold the front down. And don't hit the highway?

That's as brilliant as the redneck bumper or spoiler! If it comes to that, I will definitely employ some redneck ingenuity.

Maybe it would be easier, and less illegal to pick up a set of used hinges and get them done, then just swap them out.

Hey Gary give him the hinges and leave the hood on with 3 big straps over the top and hook them into the fenders clapping] rofl]
